Second Language Advocacy
The French Club is working to expand the French program at the Ray School, and second language opportunities in the community. What follows is a brief chronology, with additional information about French immersion.
Chronology
Oct. 25, 2001 - Report of the Task Force on Early Foreign Language Education
July 2003 - Ray School French Club starts
Jan. 5, 2005 - Proposal to Start French Grade 1 (or PDF)
In January 2005, The Advocacy Committee submitted a proposal to the Hanover School Board to start French in Grade 1 at the Ray School. The proposal was discussed at the January 12, 2005 meeting. The Education Planning Committee was directed to study the impact of such a proposal at the Ray School. No such study was actually done.
Nov. 15, 2005 - French Immersion Proposal
At the November 15, 2005 SAU meeting, Superintendent Gersen submitted the above proposal to the Board. The Advocacy Committee submitted these comments regarding the proposal.
Dec. 5, 2005 - Administrator's field trip to French immersion school in Milton, MA
Dec. 7, 2005 - Recommendations on immersion program: too ambitious for fall 2006
May 8, 2006 - Early Foreign Language Instruction Report
Nov. 27, 2006 - Elementary Foreign Language Memo - SAU plans to add Spanish in Grade 4 and 5, with no plans immersion or earlier second language.
