Hanover Fire Station Field Trip
April 4, 2005
In April, the French Club visited the Hanover Fire Station on Lyme Road. As preparation, we learned some French words for fire, smoke, and basic fire equipment. Our host, Fireman "Pokey", met us at the door to the Fire Station, and showed us the "ticker tape" alarm system for Hanover. When an alarm is pulled in town, the tape makes the bell ring so that they know where the alarm is. We saw an old fire carriage and, of course, the fire pole, which the Fire Chief was kind enough to demonstrate. Next we moved to the garage with all the fire trucks. Each student got to climb inside the ambulance and the fire engine. There were lots of interesting dials and gadgets to see. Finally, we sat in a circle in the meeting room, and a fireman came in, looking like a scary space man with his mask and all his gear. Piece by piece, he took off each piece of equipment, and passed it around the circle. We could feel how heavy everything was. At the end, we could see that the fireman wasn't scary at all, but he needed all that gear as protection from a fire. Thanks very much to the Hanover Fire Station for such a great visit!
